5 Signs You Need a New Water Heater

    March 5, 20264 min read

How Do You Know If You Need a New Water Heater?

You need a new water heater if you're seeing any of these five warning signs: it's over 10 years old, your hot water looks rusty, it's making rumbling or popping sounds, hot water runs out faster than it used to, or there are visible leaks around the base. Water heaters don't give much warning before they fail - and when they go, they can dump 40–75 gallons onto your floor. Here's how to read each sign.

    1. It's Over 10 Years Old

Most tank water heaters last 8–12 years. Check the serial number on the manufacturer's label - the first two digits usually show the year it was made. If it's approaching 10, start planning. Don't wait for an emergency. For your options, check our tank vs. tankless water heater guide.

    2. The Hot Water Looks Rusty

If rusty water comes out only when you run the hot tap, the inside of the tank is corroding. Once rust starts, it doesn't stop. A sacrificial anode rod can slow it down, but if the rod is already spent and you're seeing rust in the water - the tank is failing from the inside out.

    3. Strange Sounds - Rumbling, Popping, Banging

Sediment builds up at the bottom of the tank over time. In areas with hard water like central Illinois, it happens faster. As the sediment layer thickens, the burner has to work harder. You hear rumbling or popping. The tank strains. And your energy bills creep up.

    4. Hot Water Doesn't Last Like It Used To

Shorter showers. Lukewarm dishes. If the hot water runs out faster than it used to, sediment is reducing the tank's effective capacity. A professional flush might help. But if the problem persists after flushing, the heating elements or the tank itself may be failing.

    5. Visible Leaks or Moisture Around the Base

Any pooling water or dampness around the bottom of your water heater is a serious warning. Small leaks become big floods - fast. If you see moisture, don't wait. Call a plumber.
