Why Do You Have No Hot Water?
If you have no hot water, the fix depends on your water heater type. Gas water heater? The pilot light is probably out - check the viewing window at the bottom of the tank. Electric? Check the circuit breaker and the red reset button behind the upper access panel. If you're getting some hot water but it runs out fast, sediment buildup is reducing your tank's capacity. Here's how to diagnose and fix each cause.
Gas Water Heater? Check the Pilot Light First
If you have a gas water heater, look through the small window at the bottom of the tank. You should see a little blue flame. If it's out, follow the relighting instructions on the label. If the pilot won't stay lit after relighting, the thermocouple - the safety sensor that detects the flame - has probably failed. That's a common, affordable fix: $150–$300 installed.
Electric? Check the Breaker and Reset Button
Electric water heaters have their own circuit breaker. If it tripped, reset it. Most units also have a high-temperature reset button (usually red) behind the upper access panel. Press it firmly. If the breaker trips again or the reset button won't stay, the heating element or thermostat has likely failed. Those are straightforward repairs for a plumber.
Getting Some Hot Water - But It Runs Out Too Fast?
If you get a few minutes of hot water before it goes cold, the problem is different. Sediment buildup at the bottom of the tank reduces effective capacity - a professional flush may help. A broken dip tube can mix cold water into the hot supply. A failing heating element is another common culprit. If you're consistently running out, it may be time for a larger tank or a tankless upgrade.
Do Water Heater Problems Get Worse Over Time?
A struggling water heater only gets worse. Sediment keeps building. Elements keep corroding. A slow leak at the base can suddenly become a flood - 40–75 gallons of water on your floor. If your water heater is over 10 years old and showing signs of failure, check how long water heaters last to see if yours is on borrowed time. Acting now avoids the emergency and the water damage.
