AC Running But Not Cooling? Here's Why

Why Is Your AC Running But Not Cooling?

If your AC is running but not cooling your home, the most common cause is a dirty air filter - it restricts airflow so the system can't absorb heat. Other common causes include low refrigerant (which means there's a leak), a frozen evaporator coil, a dirty outdoor unit, or leaky ductwork. Most of these are fixable. Here's how to diagnose each one.

The #1 Cause: A Dirty Filter

This is the most common reason ACs underperform - and the easiest to fix. When the filter is clogged, airflow drops. The indoor coil can't absorb heat. The system blows lukewarm air. Check your filter right now. If you can't see light through it, replace it. This takes 60 seconds and costs under $10. It fixes the problem more often than you'd think.

Low Refrigerant Means There's a Leak

Your AC doesn't "use up" refrigerant - if it's low, there's a leak somewhere. Low refrigerant means the system can't absorb and move heat. Signs: hissing sounds near the outdoor unit, ice forming on the refrigerant lines, and warm air from the vents. This one needs a licensed technician to find the leak, fix it, and recharge the system.

    A Frozen Indoor Coil

If ice forms on the evaporator coil inside your system, it blocks airflow entirely. The AC blows warm air even though it's running. Common causes: dirty filter, low refrigerant, or a failing blower motor. Turn the system off and let it thaw completely (2–4 hours). Then restart. If it freezes again, you need a pro.

Dirty Outdoor Unit or Blocked Airflow

The outdoor unit dumps heat. If the coils are coated in dirt, or it's surrounded by bushes, leaves, and debris, it can't release heat properly. Keep at least two feet of clearance on all sides. Rinse the coils gently with a garden hose (top to bottom - never a pressure washer) once a year.

    Thermostat Problems or Leaky Ducts

A miscalibrated thermostat may not tell the system what to do. Try new batteries and double-check settings. Leaky ductwork is the hidden thief - the Department of Energy says leaky ducts can waste up to 30% of cooled air. If all that cold air is escaping into your attic or crawl space, your rooms stay warm no matter what.
